Overview: Hiking in the Val Gardena
The Val Gardena offers a wealth of hiking opportunities -- from easy and idyllic to
strenuous and exhilarating. No, we didn't attempt the ropeways, but we did see a few
daring souls clinging to the sides of the rock now and then.
What we did get were several exemplary hiking experiences. Each morning, we figured
we wouldn't be able to top the previous day's experience, and each day we were wrong.
The Valgardena Card, while not inexpensive, provides convenient access to a dozen lifts
around the valley and, at the time we traveled, to bus service between the key towns. We
used more than half of the lifts (some more than once) and more than broke even on our
investment -- before accounting for the convenience of not having to pay for a ticket each
time.
The rudimentary map below provides an overview of our four days of hiking in the Val
Gardena. The references on the map correspond to the actual days of our trip. Green
arrows are lifts; red arrows are hiking trails.
