A mini vacation in Madrid
October 2003
Madrid is a vibrant, modern city with a great deal of history and culture, and
no shortage of fantastic tapas restaurants. In many ways, it is a city of
contradictions. It is a big, bustling, sophisticated metropolis, yet very
walkable and visitor-friendly. There are a lot of young, hip people
everywhere, but old-world tradition reigns supreme.
The nearby tourist-mecca towns of Toledo and Segovia condense many
centuries of history and polyglot culture into a living diorama of cathedrals,
alcazars, plazas, towers and city walls.
In October 2003, we took advantage of a mini school break to take this
quick trip. We normally don't get to travel during the school year, so this
was a refreshing change of pace to travel when the crowds were a bit
lighter and the weather was a bit cooler.
We have to give credit to the generous posters at the fodors.com Travel
Talk forum, especially the incomparable Maribel. This addictive online
discussion board is one of the most valuable travel resources available
anywhere, and our trip would not have been nearly as successful without it.
