Rome & Venice -
An Italian Odyssey

Those in the know will tell you in no uncertain terms: don’t visit Italy in
August. It’s oppressively hot, the locals have all skipped town and the
restaurants and shops in the cities all close down. It’s madness to even try
it!

Well, don’t believe all the hype. We did it and lived to tell the tale. More
importantly, we had a wonderful time walking in the footsteps of history,
taking hundreds of pictures, eating delicious pasta and pizza, and living ‘la
dolce vita’ in two of the most incredible cities in the world.

This was the first time in Rome for Chris, and Marisa hadn’t visited since
she was a schoolgirl. Allie was only eight years old for this excursion, and
we had doubts as to her stamina for this largely on-foot adventure. As it
turned out, our fears were unfounded as she displayed a great deal of
momentum and fortitude throughout our perambulations (as long as she
was consistently coaxed and rewarded with gelato and Coca-Cola).

Special note -
The world of international travel – indeed, the very history of our nation and
the world – was shaken and forever changed just one week after our return
from this trip. The aftermath of the tragedies on 9/11/01 continue to affect
us all significantly today. For many of us, we will never again travel the
globe with the wide eyes of innocents abroad. Before pressing on with the
remainder of this trip report, please spare a thought for the thousands who
perished on that fateful day and the many thousands more who have been
killed or wounded in the Middle East since then.
